Introduction

Saugatuck's galleries are a real extension of its century-plus art-colony history, not just tourist-shop decor. We checked seven galleries below, six in Saugatuck itself and one in neighboring Douglas, with verified hours for each.

Amazwi Contemporary Art

Founded in 2004, Amazwi specializes in contemporary African art — paintings, stone and wood carvings, and textiles from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tunisia, Ghana, and elsewhere on the continent. Its name means "voices" in Zulu.

James Brandess Studios & Gallery

Original oil paintings by James Brandess, trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, known specifically for landscapes of the Saugatuck dunes and lakeshore, and an ongoing series of more than 450 portraits of Saugatuck residents. Housed in a historic building that once served as Saugatuck's post office.

Capizzo Studio

Founded in 2021 by Nick Cappelletti and Michelle Pizzo, this is a gallery-and-event venue combining a main gallery, smaller galleries, a studio workspace, and outdoor exhibition space — showing fine art, sculpture, ceramics, wood, jewelry, and vintage items. It also functions as an event venue for weddings and gatherings, a different character from the downtown Butler Street gallery cluster.

Saugatuck Gallery

Open since 1981, Saugatuck Gallery specializes in oil paintings and custom framing for home décor, with more than 1,000 paintings in stock. Some recent traveler reviews have raised concerns that certain pieces resemble mass-market decor items sold elsewhere — a reported traveler impression, not an independently verified claim, but worth knowing if you're expecting a fine-art gallery in the same sense as the others on this list.

DUNE Vintage & Contemporary Art

Despite being commonly called "Dune Gallery," this is more accurately a curated vintage-and-contemporary art boutique — art objects alongside leather handbags, clothing, and other curated goods.

J. Petter Galleries (in Douglas)

Located across the river in Douglas, not Saugatuck itself, J. Petter Galleries is described as the longest-running gallery on the "Art Coast of Michigan," founded in 1973 (originally in Saugatuck before its flagship moved to Douglas). It spans 24 rooms and roughly 12,000 square feet, showing more than 130 artists across paintings, sculpture, blown glass, ceramics, and jewelry, alongside an in-house wine bar and outdoor sculpture garden.

• Capizzo Studio and DUNE both have a broader, boutique-adjacent character worth knowing about before you go in expecting a traditional gallery.

• J. Petter Galleries is worth the short trip across the river to Douglas — it's the largest single gallery in the area by a wide margin.
