Several well-known names sit across the water in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, near the ferry docks, and borrow the island's branding without being reachable unless you make a separate mainland trip. We checked eight shops total; four are genuinely on the island, and we've excluded the other four from this guide for that reason.

Original Murdick's Fudge

Widely credited as the island's original fudge company, Original Murdick's Fudge traces back to 1887, when the Murdick family arrived to make canvas awnings for the Grand Hotel and opened the island's first candy shop instead. The family is credited with pioneering the marble-slab fudge-cooling technique still used across the island today — a well-repeated claim backed by the family's own long-standing history, though like most century-old small-business origin stories, it ultimately rests on the company's own record rather than an independently verifiable historical document.

Joann's Fudge (Two Locations)

Joann's Fudge operates two genuinely separate storefronts on the island, at 7309 Main St and 7408 Main St, alongside a third location that's actually on the mainland in Mackinaw City (excluded from this guide — see below). Both island locations are real, distinct shops under the same family fudge brand, not a scraping duplicate.

Ryba's Fudge Shop

One of four Ryba's fudge storefronts on the island (this guide covers the Cornerstore location specifically), Ryba's is a fourth-generation family fudge business known for live fudge-making demonstrations on marble slabs.

Mainland Shops We Excluded

Four other "Mackinac"-branded fudge shops turned up in our research, and all four are genuinely operating businesses — just not on the island. A third Joann's Fudge location, Mackinac Fudge Shop, Fort Fudge Shop, and Devon's Mackinac Island Fudge & Popcorn Co. are all based in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, on the mainland side of the ferry crossing. If you're only visiting the island itself, these aren't reachable without a separate trip — worth knowing before you go looking for a specific shop by name and can't find it downtown.

Practical Tips

• All four island shops are seasonal, with storefronts generally open May through October and online ordering available year-round.

• If a specific historic pedigree matters to you, Original Murdick's is the name most consistently tied to the island's earliest fudge history.

• Don't assume a "Mackinac" name in a shop's branding means it's on the island — several well-known names are mainland-only, near the ferry docks in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace.

• All three shops sell fudge by the slice or box rather than by the pound — if you see a per-pound price quoted elsewhere, it likely isn't sourced from the shop's own current pricing.

Original Murdick's 1887 founding and the marble-slab technique's origin were checked against the company's own history and independent food-history coverage, which explicitly notes the Murdicks are credited with popularizing the technique rather than inventing fudge itself. The mainland status of the four excluded shops was confirmed against each business's own address listings. Hours for all three shops rest partly or fully on third-party aggregator data rather than each shop's own site, since none of the three official sites publish hours directly — Joann's Fudge in particular had genuinely conflicting hours across sources and should be confirmed by phone before a special trip.
