Mackinac Island runs on a genuinely seasonal calendar — most businesses, hotels, and attractions operate only part of the year, and even the horses go to the mainland for winter. We checked current season dates to lay out when the island is actually open versus quiet.

The Season: Roughly May Through October

Most tourist-facing businesses operate from late April or May through October. Fort Mackinac's confirmed 2026 season runs May 1 through October 24, with shorter hours in September and October than during peak summer. The Grand Hotel's 2026 season runs April 24 through October 24 — its 140th season. Outside this roughly six-month window, ferry service, hotels, restaurants, and most shops close for the year.

Peak Summer (July-August)

July and August bring the fullest hours, the widest range of open businesses, and the biggest crowds. This is also when the island's summer population — residents plus tourists and seasonal workers — can swell to an estimated 15,000 on the busiest days, a striking contrast to the roughly 500 to 600 people who live there year-round.

The Lilac Festival (June)

The island's signature annual event is 78 years old as of 2026, making it Michigan's longest-running flower festival. The 2026 festival runs June 5-14, with a Grand Parade, a Lilac Festival 10K, and coronation events. It's a genuinely good way to combine lilac bloom with lighter crowds than peak summer.

Winter: Nearly Everything Closes

Once the season ends, the island empties out substantially. Nearly all tourist businesses close, including the Grand Hotel, and the horses that pull the island's carriages are shipped to the mainland for winter. A small number of year-round businesses serve the remaining residents — commonly reported examples include Doud's Market, the island's grocery store — though we couldn't independently verify each specific business's current winter status against its own site, so treat "a few things stay open" as the general pattern rather than a guaranteed list.

Practical Tips

• If you want the island at its fullest and liveliest, July and August deliver that — but expect the heaviest crowds and the earliest need to book lodging.

• Early-to-mid June pairs lilac bloom with noticeably lighter crowds than peak summer.

• If you're visiting outside the May-October window, confirm directly with the ferry companies and any specific business you're counting on — the island effectively shuts down for tourism in winter, and even normally-reliable info can go stale between seasons.
