The Saugatuck Chain Ferry

Known locally as "Diane," the Saugatuck Chain Ferry is a genuine hand-cranked river crossing, with a river-crossing tradition dating to 1857 (the current boat itself was built in the 1960s and is owned by the City of Saugatuck). It's widely described as the last remaining hand-cranked chain ferry of its kind in the United States — a frequently repeated claim we couldn't independently audit against every ferry nationwide, so treat it as widely reported rather than formally verified. It serves real short-hop transportation for people crossing to reach Mount Baldhead, hiking trails, and Oval Beach, and many riders also treat the crossing itself as the attraction, riding over and immediately back. Mount Baldhead

A real sand dune about 250 feet tall, on the strip of land between Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River directly across from downtown Saugatuck. A stairway commonly cited at 303 steps (sources vary slightly, 302-310) climbs to a viewing deck at Mount Baldhead Park, overlooking downtown Saugatuck and, in leaner-foliage seasons, Lake Michigan itself.

Saugatuck Dunes State Park

A larger, more undeveloped natural preserve a few miles up the coast from town, covering roughly 1,000 acres with about 2.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 13-14 miles of trails, with dunes reaching over 200 feet. Unlike Mount Baldhead, which you can walk or ferry to directly from downtown, the state park is reached by car or trail and includes the Patty Birkholz Natural Area, home to rare and endangered dune plants.

Oval Beach

A well-regarded Lake Michigan beach that ranked #24 on TripAdvisor's 2025 Travelers' Choice "Best of the Best" US beaches list and #7 in a USA Today Best Beach in Michigan reader poll. You may also see older accolades repeated online — a Condé Nast Traveler world-beaches ranking, a National Geographic Traveler list, an MTV top-five mention — but we couldn't independently verify these against a primary listing or confirm the year, so treat them as commonly cited legacy claims rather than freshly confirmed facts.

Practical Tips

• The chain ferry, Mount Baldhead, and Oval Beach combine naturally into a single half-day outing on foot from downtown.

• Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a separate trip requiring a car — don't expect to walk there from downtown the way you can reach Mount Baldhead.

• Confirm the chain ferry's current-season operating hours before planning your route, since it's weather-dependent and doesn't run year-round.
