Introduction

Whitefish's lodging spans a lakefront resort to a genuine budget motel, split across downtown, the lakeshore, and Whitefish Mountain Resort itself, up the mountain from town. We checked eight properties below — one well-known budget property turned out to have closed and reopened under an entirely different name, exactly the kind of stale listing worth catching.

The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

An AAA Four-Diamond resort and the only full-service property directly on Whitefish Lake, with a marina, spa, and lakefront restaurant, about a mile from downtown.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • 4pm/11am.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • 11 miles, about 20 minutes, per the resort's own site.
  • *Good to know:
  • No pets allowed. Offers guest transportation from the airport and Amtrak depot with 24 hours' advance notice.

Grouse Mountain Lodge

A Whitefish fixture since

  1. Worth noting: it's currently mid-rebrand toward a planned relaunch as "Hotel Whitefish," targeted for 2027, but as of now it's still operating and bookable under its current name, Grouse Mountain Lodge.
  • *Check-in/out:
  • 4pm/11am (Paddle Ridge and Apgar Lookout units check out at 10am instead).
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • Roughly 12-16 miles, 20-25 minutes — slightly further than other downtown properties, not pinned to an exact official figure.
  • *Good to know:
  • One of the few pet-friendly properties in this group (dogs allowed). A $12/night amenities fee covers parking, shuttle, pool, bikes, and ski storage; airport shuttle available for $23/person each way with 48 hours' advance reservation.

Whitefish Riverfront Hotel

A 76-room hotel on the Whitefish River, about a 10-minute walk to downtown. Worth a rename flag: this was formerly known as The Pine Lodge on Whitefish River before a 2025 acquisition and rebrand — any source still using the old name is outdated.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • 4pm/11am.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • About 15 minutes by car, per the official site.
  • *Good to know:
  • Dogs allowed on 1st/2nd floor rooms only, up to 2 dogs per room, 80-lb weight limit each, $25/day fee capped at $100/week — pet rooms must be booked by phone given limited availability.

The Firebrand Hotel

A boutique hotel in the heart of downtown, opened in 2016, with a bar and restaurant, spa services, and a rooftop patio.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • 4pm/11am.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • 11 miles, 15 minutes northwest, per the official site.
  • *Good to know:
  • Dogs allowed on the first floor only (excluded from Skyline rooms); a per-night fee applies, though the exact amount conflicts across sources — confirm directly when booking with a pet.

Larch House

A luxury boutique hotel that opened in fall 2025 in the historic Railway District, spanning multiple buildings with a rooftop terrace and heated pool.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • 4pm/11am, confirmed on the official site; late checkout runs $35 for the first hour, $100 for a half-day after that.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • 12.1 miles, per the official site.
  • *Good to know:
  • Dogs allowed in designated pet-friendly rooms only, $50/night fee capped at 3 nights. Complimentary self-parking is first-come-first-served, with a paid private-lot option when available.

Garden Wall Inn

A restored 1920s house-turned-inn with five guestrooms, operating since 1987, one tree-lined block from downtown.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • 5pm/11am — a genuinely later check-in than every other property on this list; late arrival after 9pm carries a $25 fee.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • About 15 minutes, per the official site.
  • *Good to know:
  • No pets allowed. Free off-street parking included with all rates.

Kandahar Lodge

Worth a location flag: this European-style boutique ski lodge is up at Whitefish Mountain Resort itself, about 7 miles from the town of Whitefish per its own site — not in town, and offering genuine ski-in access instead.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • Not stated anywhere on the property's own site — call ahead to confirm.
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • About 18 miles, roughly 30 minutes, combining the lodge's own distance-from-town figure with the resort's own stated airport drive time.
  • *Good to know:
  • No pets allowed except certified service animals (emotional-support animals explicitly excluded).

Downtowner Inn

A genuine budget option, one block from the Whitefish Amtrak station, with an on-site restaurant and free parking.

  • *Check-in/out:
  • No official hotel website could be found for this property — only third-party booking sites, which suggest check-in around 4pm and checkout 11am. Treat as unconfirmed and call ahead: (406) 862
  • *Distance from FCA airport:
  • About 15 minutes by car, consistent with other in-town properties, though sourced only from third-party listings.
  • *Good to know:
  • About a 1-minute walk from the Whitefish Amtrak depot; free parking reported by multiple sources.

A Property We Excluded (Under Its Old Name)

A longtime budget motel that operated for years as Super 8 at 800 Spokane Ave has since closed under that name; the property was renovated and reopened as a different boutique concept. Any source still referring to "Super 8" at this address is outdated.

Practical Tips

  • The Lodge at Whitefish Lake and Larch House are the two strongest picks for a higher-end stay right now.

  • Kandahar Lodge is worth choosing specifically if ski-in access to Whitefish Mountain Resort matters more than downtown walkability.

  • Garden Wall Inn's 5pm check-in is notably later than every other property here — plan your arrival accordingly.

  • Double-check any reference to "The Pine Lodge" or "Super 8" at their old addresses — both have since rebranded under new names.

  • Whitefish's own airport (FCA) is actually near Kalispell, about 12-15 miles from most in-town properties — see our travel guide's "Getting There" section for the full carrier breakdown.

Sources and Verification Notes

Each property's operating status, address, and history were checked against its own official site and cross-checked against Yelp or TripAdvisor, plus local press including the Whitefish Pilot and Daily Inter Lake. The Pine Lodge's rebrand and the former Super 8 property's closure and reopening under a new name were both independently confirmed before being noted. Check-in/out times and airport distances were checked directly against each property's own site where stated; Downtowner Inn and Kandahar Lodge had no official source for check-in/out times, so those are flagged as unconfirmed rather than presented as fact.
