Introduction

Whitefish's attractions split between the ski resort up the mountain, the lake in town, and Glacier National Park a short drive away. We checked current facts, fees, and a couple of location mix-ups worth correcting.

Whitefish Mountain Resort

Not walkable from downtown — the base area sits about 5 miles up Big Mountain Road, roughly a 10-15 minute drive, though a free seasonal shuttle connects downtown to the resort. Vertical drop is 2,353 feet; skiable acreage and trail count are cited inconsistently across sources (roughly 3,000 acres and either 93 or 110 named trails depending on the source), so treat exact figures as approximate. In summer, the resort runs a scenic gondola, zipline tours, and an alpine slide, roughly June through September.

Whitefish Lake and City Beach

City Beach, in town, offers free entry with paid parking and a boat launch and rental operation staffed Memorial Day through Labor Day; there are no lifeguards, though a summer ranger is on duty. Whitefish Lake itself runs about 5.8 miles long and 1.4 miles wide, with a maximum depth of 233 feet, making it one of Montana's deeper natural lakes.

Glacier National Park

A genuine day trip, with the West Entrance roughly 25 miles and 35-40 minutes from Whitefish via US-2 — though Columbia Falls, at about 17 miles, actually sits closer. As of 2026, Glacier has dropped its vehicle-reservation system for Going-to-the-Sun Road, replacing it with a ticketed shuttle option and a 3-hour parking cap at Logan Pass. A new non-resident surcharge also applies in 2026 for visitors without a qualifying pass. Current entrance fees run around $35 per vehicle in summer.

Historic Downtown and the Whitefish Depot

A walkable downtown core with a historic 1927 Tudor Revival train depot at 500 Depot Street, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Amtrak's Empire Builder route stops here daily, and the depot building also houses a local history museum.

Whitefish Lake State Park

A distinct, separate facility from City Beach — a Montana state park about 2 miles from downtown with its own campground, swimming area, and boat launch, charging a modest day-use fee for nonresidents.

Whitefish Trail and Danny On Trail

The Whitefish Trail is a growing nonprofit-built trail network, with roughly 47 miles completed toward a long-term vision of a 55-plus-mile loop around town — worth knowing it's not yet a finished loop. A Brewery Correction

Flathead Lake Brewing Co., sometimes mistakenly listed as a Whitefish brewery, is actually located in Bigfork, on Flathead Lake, a different and much larger lake to the south — not in Whitefish. Separately, Great Northern Brewing Company's original downtown Whitefish taproom permanently closed in 2020, though the beer brand still exists via contract brewing elsewhere; there's no working taproom in Whitefish to visit under that name today.

• Don't assume Whitefish Mountain Resort is walkable — factor in the drive or use the free seasonal shuttle.
