Introduction

Bend's major activities are almost all tied to its high-desert geography — a nearby mountain, a river through downtown, and a volcano within the city itself. We checked current facts on each.

Mt. Bachelor

About 22 miles west of Bend, Mt. Bachelor is widely described as the largest ski area in Oregon and one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the Pacific Northwest, with a summit elevation of 9,065 feet, a base elevation of 5,700 feet, and more than 4,300 skiable acres across 101 runs and 12 lifts.

The Deschutes River and Bend Whitewater Park

The Deschutes River runs directly through downtown Bend, and its tubing, surfing, and paddling culture centers on the Bend Whitewater Park, a series of engineered channels and rapids just west of downtown near McKay Park. Floaters typically put in upstream and take out near the whitewater park.

Pilot Butte

A genuine extinct volcanic cinder cone within Bend's city limits, rising about 490 to 500 feet above the surrounding plain to an elevation of roughly 4,140 feet. Bend is one of only six US cities with a volcano inside its boundaries, alongside Portland's Mount Tabor, Honolulu's Diamond Head, and a handful of others. A paved road climbs to the summit, open to vehicles during daylight hours roughly May through September and closed in winter; two hiking trails also reach the top, plus a separate 1.8-mile trail around the base.

The Bend Ale Trail

A real, official self-guided program run in partnership with Visit Bend, with a free printed or digital passport and GPS check-ins at participating breweries. Smith Rock State Park (a Day Trip, Not in Bend)

A well-known rock-climbing and hiking destination, Smith Rock State Park is located near the town of Terrebonne, roughly 25-26 miles northeast of Bend — about a 25 to 30-minute drive. It's a common half-day or full-day trip from Bend, not a Bend attraction itself.

Practical Tips

• Pilot Butte's summit road has a seasonal closure — check current dates if you're planning to drive up rather than hike.

• The Bend Ale Trail passport system is worth picking up at the Visit Bend visitor center if you're planning to hit several breweries.

• Budget a half day minimum for Smith Rock given the drive, even though it's a genuinely worthwhile trip from Bend.
