Introduction

Bend's high-desert climate and its proximity to Mt. Bachelor mean the city essentially offers two very different seasonal experiences. We checked current patterns for both.

Winter: Ski Season at Mt. Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor, about 22 miles west of Bend, is widely described as the largest ski area in Oregon and one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest, with a summit elevation of 9,065 feet and more than 4,300 skiable acres. Winter in Bend itself stays relatively dry compared to the mountain, thanks to the high-desert rain-shadow effect, but expect cold temperatures and snow access dependent on conditions at elevation.

Summer: Floating the Deschutes River

Summer is when Bend's river culture is in full swing — tubing, surfing, and paddling on the Deschutes River through the engineered channels of the Bend Whitewater Park, right in town. This is also peak season for hiking, and for exploring the area's dense cluster of breweries along the Bend Ale Trail.

Practical Tips

• If skiing is your priority, plan around Mt. Bachelor's season and check current snow conditions before booking, since access depends on the mountain's own conditions, not just the calendar.

• Summer is the more reliable season for river floating and general outdoor activity in town itself.

• The Bend Ale Trail is a year-round activity, not seasonal, if breweries are a priority regardless of when you visit.
