Overview

Fredericksburg has a humid subtropical Hill Country climate: hot summers, mild winters, and its wettest month typically in May. The most comfortable months for walking Main Street and hiking are spring and fall, but several of the town's signature draws — bluebonnets, peaches, and wine harvest — are tied to specific, narrower windows.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is Fredericksburg's most popular season. Average highs climb from the mid-70s°F in March to mid-80s°F by May, with comfortable evenings. This is bluebonnet season across the Hill Country, typically peaking from late March through April, though exact timing shifts year to year with winter and spring rainfall — check a current bluebonnet report rather than assuming fixed dates. Wildseed Farms, about 7 miles east of town on Highway 290, is one of the most-cited viewing spots, alongside the Willow City Loop drive. May is also the area's wettest month on average, so pack for occasional rain.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is hot: August average highs run around 94°F, with little relief from humidity. This is peach season — Fredericksburg-area peaches (grown mostly around nearby Stonewall) peak from roughly mid-June to late July. It's also when Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, about 18 miles north of town, gets genuinely dangerous underestimated: the granite dome offers no shade on the Summit Trail, and midday heat there in summer is a real hazard — plan an early-morning start, carry more water than you think you'll need, and check current conditions before you go.

Fall (September-November)

Fall brings cooler, drier weather and is generally considered the second-best season after spring, with the added draw of Texas wine harvest season along Highway 290 and in the downtown tasting rooms. Fredericksburg's annual Oktoberfest, running since 1981, is typically held in early October (confirm current-year dates on the event's official site, since they shift slightly year to year).

Winter (December-February)

Winters are mild by most US standards — January average highs are around 60°F, with average lows near freezing — and this is the town's quietest, least crowded season, with lower lodging rates given how tightly booked Fredericksburg's large guesthouse inventory can run in peak months.

Reservations and Crowds

Enchanted Rock is worth special mention: Texas Parks and Wildlife officially describes day-use passes as "recommended" rather than strictly mandatory, but the park genuinely sells out on weekends, school breaks, and holidays, and once it hits capacity, walk-ins are turned away entirely. In practice, treat a reservation as close to required if you're visiting on a weekend in spring or fall. Passes can be booked up to a month in advance through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system.
