German Bakery

Old German Bakery & Restaurant (225 W. Main St) is the town's scratch-made German bakery pick, known for traditional breads and apple strudel alongside a full breakfast-and-lunch menu — worth knowing it functions more as a full restaurant with a bakery counter than a standalone cafe. Open Monday, Tuesday, and Friday through Sunday; closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Specialty Coffee

Java Ranch (114 E. Main St) is a 20-plus-year Main Street fixture known for Hill Country roasted coffee and a landmark mural. KaffeeHaus (109 N. Adams St) is an owner-run espresso bar with scratch-baked pastries and vegan/gluten-free options. RockHaus Coffee (215 W. Main St) pours cortados and lattes from inside FarmHaus, a home-furnishings mercantile store — a genuine coffee counter, just not a standalone cafe space. Sunday Supply (206 S. Adams St), housed in a historic Sunday House building, serves specialty coffee alongside kolaches and breakfast tacos.

Cafe-Adjacent Spots Worth Knowing

The Pharmacy (248 E. Main St), inside the historic Keidel Pharmacy building at the Albert Hotel, functions as much as an artisanal market and deli as a coffee counter. Easy Company Books & Coffee (308 E. Main St) is primarily a curated bookstore with coffee as a secondary offering, built around a WWII "Easy Company" theme.

Cafes We Excluded (and Common Mix-Ups)

Rather Sweet Bakery & Café, a well-known former Fredericksburg bakery, closed back in 2012 — it still surfaces in older source material and should not be listed as current. Naegelin's Bakery, a historic German bakery that sometimes gets attributed to Fredericksburg in search results, is actually located in New Braunfels, a different Hill Country town. Der Kuchen Laden, despite its German name ("the cake shop"), is a kitchen and cookware store with a small coffee bar, not a bakery.

Practical Tips

  • If you want a genuine standalone coffee-shop experience rather than a bakery, market, or bookstore with a coffee counter, Java Ranch, KaffeeHaus, and Sunday Supply are the closest fits.

  • All the cafes above are confirmed within the 78624 downtown core (Main Street or Adams Street) — not Luckenbach, Comfort, or Kerrville, towns that sometimes get conflated with Fredericksburg in regional "Hill Country" round-ups.

Sources and Verification Notes

Each cafe's current operating status and address were checked against its own official listing and Yelp, with particular attention paid to distinguishing genuine standalone cafes from bakeries, bookstores, and mercantile shops that also happen to sell coffee.
