Otto's German Bistro (316 E. Austin St) is an upscale take on German-Texan cuisine, open daily, and takes reservations — a rarity among Fredericksburg's German restaurants, most of which are first-come, first-served. Der Lindenbaum (312 E. Main St) is a more traditional schnitzel-and-sausage spot, open Wednesday through Monday and closed Tuesdays. The Auslander Restaurant & Biergarten (323 E. Main St) pairs a Bavarian menu with live music several nights a week. Old German Bakery & Restaurant (225 W. Main St), in business since 1975, serves a full German breakfast-and-lunch menu alongside its bakery counter — note its unusual closed days, Wednesday and Thursday both, which is easy to miss when planning a visit.

Texas BBQ

Junebug's BBQ, at the historic Albert Hotel (205 E. Austin St), is run by pitmaster Justin Spencer, part of a 2023 Memphis in May World Champion team. It's a genuinely limited-hours operation — Thursday through Sunday only, 11am until sold out — and reviews are mixed, so treat it as recommended by several sources rather than a unanimous favorite. Eaker Barbecue (607 W. Main St), with Korean-Texan influences from its ownership, has also drawn recognition from Texas food press as one of the state's stronger BBQ joints; confirm current hours directly before visiting.

Farm-to-Table and Upscale

Hill & Vine (210 S. Adams St) is a casual-upscale, Texas-ingredient-focused kitchen serving lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, first-come-first-served with no reservations. Vaudeville (230 E. Main St) combines a bistro, wine club, gourmet market, and art gallery under one roof — worth knowing that full dinner service is only available Friday and Saturday, with lunch-only service the rest of the week.

Casual and Live Music

Hondo's on Main (312 W. Main St), owned by the daughter of Luckenbach's Hondo Crouch, is as much a live-music venue as a restaurant, serving casual Texas food Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday).

Restaurants We Excluded

Several long-running Fredericksburg favorites still show up in "best of" round-ups but are no longer open: *Navajo Grill

• Several downtown restaurants close on different weekdays — Der Lindenbaum (Tuesday), Old German Bakery (Wednesday and Thursday), Hondo's (Monday and Tuesday) — check hours before building a day around one spot.

• Otto's is the most reservation-friendly pick; most others are first-come, first-served.

• BBQ spots, especially Junebug's, tend to sell out early — arrive close to opening.
