Bend's bakery scene includes both long-established local shops and a national chain outpost. We checked seven genuine bakeries below with verified hours — two other candidates from initial research turned out not to belong on this list, for different reasons.

The Sparrow Bakery Northwest

Known for made-from-scratch pastries, especially its well-known "Ocean Roll," this location also serves a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu with beer and wine.

Village Baker

Locally owned since 1997, known for Old World-style rustic breads — including a walnut-raisin loaf and a Bavarian black-butte-porter loaf — plus handmade pastries and sandwiches on house-baked bread.

Nancy P's Cafe & Bakery

Known for pies, cinnamon rolls, and savory breakfast pockets alongside sandwiches.

• Thu–Tue 7:00 AM–2:00 PM; closed Wednesday.

*Good to Know:

• Dog-friendly outdoor garden patio. Catering/custom orders available.

M's Bakery

Worth knowing this is a newer addition, having soft-opened in January 2025 with a grand opening that March, in the Old Mill District. It's known for artisanal sourdough breads, focaccia, baguettes, and croissants, and was a runner-up for Best Bakery in a 2025 "Best of Central Oregon" reader poll.

*Hours:

• Daily 7:00 AM–3:00 PM.

*Good to Know:

• Owners incorporate Mexican-heritage chocolates, coffee, and wine alongside the core bakery menu.

Café des Chutes

Known for European-inspired scratch pastries, including a notable pistachio croissant, alongside coffee from a local roaster.

*Hours:

• Daily 8:00 AM–2:00 PM (official site; some older press features cite an earlier 3:00 PM close — official site's 2 PM figure treated as current).

*Good to Know:

• Occupies Sparrow Bakery's original 2011-era Scott Street location. Founder Cari Brown was Sparrow's former general manager. Known for the "Oregon Roll," an Ocean-Roll-inspired pastry.

the Pantry

Worth a category note: under new ownership since around March 2025, this is more a hybrid cafe, bakery, bulk refillery, and art space than a dedicated bakery — pastries are one part of a broader concept.

*Hours:

• Uncertain post-2025 ownership change — some sources show Wed–Sun 9 AM–3 PM, others show daily 7 AM–3 PM with added evening hours 2-3 weeknights. Call ahead to confirm before visiting.

*Good to Know:

• The standalone wine bar that once operated inside closed at the end of 2023 — don't expect it as a current feature.

Great Harvest Bakery & Cafe

Worth knowing this is a locally owned outpost of the national Great Harvest Bread Co. franchise, not a locally originated business, known for whole-grain bread milled in-store daily from Montana wheat berries.

Two We Excluded

Not Bread, a Bend-founded gluten-free and dairy-free bakery, has never had a retail storefront in Bend — it operates through farmers markets and online ordering only. A similarly branded shop called Good Friend, using the same product flavors, opened under different named owners in Redmond, not Bend; whether this represents a rebrand or a separate business couldn't be confirmed, so it's left out of this guide rather than asserted either way. Market of Choice, a full-service grocery store with an in-house bakery counter, is excluded as well — it's a grocery store first, not a dedicated bakery business.

Practical Tips

• Village Baker is the pick if a genuinely long-established local bakery matters to you.

• M's Bakery is worth trying but is new enough that it doesn't yet have the track record of the others on this list.

• the Pantry's exact current hours are genuinely unsettled post-2025 ownership change — call ahead rather than relying on a fixed schedule.

• If you're specifically after Great Harvest's whole-grain breads, know going in that it's a franchise location, not a unique Bend business.
