Two Historic Hotels We Excluded

Hotel Ponce de Leon, built by Henry Flagler in 1888, closed as a hotel in the 1960s and became the founding building of Flagler College in 1968 — it's an active college campus today, not lodging. Hotel Alcazar, its companion Flagler-era building, closed in the early 1930s and reopened in 1948 as the Lightner Museum. Neither should be recommended as a place to stay.

Practical Tips

• Casa Monica Resort & Spa and St. Francis Inn are the two strongest picks for genuine historic character.

• Don't confuse Casa Monica with Hotel Ponce de Leon or Hotel Alcazar — despite all three being Flagler-era buildings, only Casa Monica currently operates as a hotel.

• Budget Inn St. Augustine is the clearest budget option, an easy walk across the Bridge of Lions from downtown.

• Most properties on this list charge for self-parking rather than including it free — worth budgeting for, especially in the historic district.
