Introduction

Moab's attractions split between two national parks, a state park, and a cluster of adventure-sport trails right around town. We checked current facts, fees, and a few commonly repeated claims that turned out to need correction.

Arches National Park

About 5 miles north of downtown Moab, roughly a 10-minute drive. As of 2026, Arches no longer requires the timed-entry reservation that was in place from 2022 through 2025 — the National Park Service dropped the requirement, though separate reservations still apply to Devils Garden Campground and the Fiery Furnace permit area. Current entrance fees run $30 per private vehicle for a 7-day pass. Delicate Arch, the park's most famous formation, is not visible from a roadside pullout — reaching it requires a moderate 3-mile round-trip hike with no shade along the way. The Windows section offers an easier, roughly 1-mile loop for a quicker visit.

Canyonlands National Park

Genuinely three separate districts, not one stop. Island in the Sky, the closest, is about 32 miles and 40 minutes from Moab on paved roads. The Needles district is roughly 74 miles away, over an hour and a half, reached via a different highway entirely — not a quick add-on to an Island in the Sky visit. The Maze, the most remote district, requires roughly 46 miles of unpaved road and mandatory high-clearance 4WD, realistically not accessible to most visitors. Entrance fees match Arches at $30 per vehicle.

Dead Horse Point State Park

About 32 miles from Moab, along the same general route as Island in the Sky before branching off. Its main overlook sits roughly 2,000 feet above the Colorado River. Worth a correction here: Dead Horse Point is widely credited as the filming location for Thelma & Louise's famous ending, but the actual shot was filmed at an unofficial spot across the canyon in Canyonlands National Park — visible from Dead Horse Point's overlooks, but not physically within the state park. Current entrance fee is around $20 per vehicle.

Slickrock Bike Trail

A roughly 10.5-mile loop on Navajo sandstone in the Sand Flats Recreation Area, about 2 miles from town, rated difficult. It was originally built in 1969 as a motorcycle trail, not a bike trail — mountain bikers adopted it in the 1980s, and it's genuinely responsible for putting Moab on the map for the sport, even though the sport itself originated elsewhere. A Sand Flats day-use fee applies.

Hell's Revenge and the Easter Jeep Safari

A roughly 6.5-mile Jeep trail in the same Sand Flats area, requiring an experienced driver and a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. It's a centerpiece of the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari, a long-running event (2026 marked its 60th anniversary) whose exact dates shift each year with the Easter calendar — check current dates before planning a trip around it.

Colorado River Recreation

Multiple established outfitters run Colorado River trips out of Moab, ranging from calm, family-friendly scenic floats to more technical whitewater sections further afield. Trip schedules and pricing change seasonally, so check directly with an outfitter close to your travel dates.

Moab Giants and the Moab Museum

Moab Giants, a dinosaur-track park and museum about 9 miles north of town near the Arches turnoff, is a real, currently operating attraction. Downtown, the Moab Museum (formerly known as the Museum of Moab — note the name change if you encounter older references) covers the area's natural and cultural history, with a seasonal winter closure in late December through early February.

Practical Tips

• Check nps.gov/arch directly before your trip — Arches' entry-reservation policy has changed multiple times in recent years and could change again.

• Don't plan a single-day Canyonlands visit covering both Island in the Sky and The Needles — the drive between them takes hours.

• Use "visible from Dead Horse Point" rather than "filmed at Dead Horse Point" if referencing the Thelma & Louise connection.
