Introduction

Traverse City's location puts several genuinely different Northern Michigan destinations within reach of a day trip — though "day trip" means very different amounts of driving depending on which one you pick. We checked current distances and drive times for the most commonly cited options.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Charlevoix

Charlevoix is about 54 miles from Traverse City, roughly a 1 hour 14 minute drive — a genuine but manageable day trip to a smaller Lake Michigan resort town with its own harbor and downtown.

Petoskey

Petoskey sits further along the same route as Charlevoix, commonly combined with it on the same drive north along US-31 — both towns are frequently visited together as a single day-trip loop rather than separately.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is the most involved option: roughly 100 miles of driving from Traverse City (about 3 hours 37 minutes) to reach Mackinaw City, plus a separate ferry crossing to the car-free island itself, since no vehicles (including rental cars) are permitted on Mackinac Island. Treat this as a long, full-day commitment rather than a relaxed add-on — the scenic route north, which crosses the Mackinac Bridge and passes through Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Charlevoix, alone runs about 185 miles and 3.5 hours of driving one-way before the ferry.

• Sleeping Bear Dunes is the realistic choice if you want a day trip without a long drive eating into your time on-site.

• Petoskey and Charlevoix pair well as a single combined trip along US-31 rather than two separate outings.
