Specialty Coffee
*Rowan Coffee
- roasts single-origin coffee at two locations — the original downtown spot at 66 Broadway St and a West Asheville location at 785 Haywood Rd with an on-site roastery in a converted auto garage, opened in
- High Five Coffee, at 190 Broadway St and 13 Rankin Ave downtown, pours espresso exclusively from Counter Culture Coffee with rotating specialty drinks; a former third location on Riverside Drive near the River Arts District has closed.
Bakeries
OWL Bakery (Old World Levain), with locations at 295 Haywood Rd in West Asheville and 197 Charlotte St in North Asheville, is known for naturally leavened sourdough and viennoiserie from a 2022 James Beard semifinalist baker. MOTHER Bakery & Café (244 Short Coxe Ave), a sourdough-focused South Slope spot, earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction. Old Europe Pastries (18 Broadway St) is a longtime downtown fixture for French and European-technique pastries, recently relocated to a new space still on Broadway.
Downtown Institution
Malaprop's Bookstore & Café (55 Haywood St), an independent bookstore café operating since 1982, serves locally roasted coffee and pastries from local bakeries in a genuine downtown literary landmark.
River Arts District — A Cafe That Relocated After Helene
Summit Coffee's River Arts District location was completely destroyed in the September 2024 flood and stayed closed for roughly 18 months before reopening in April 2026 in a new building, Wedge Studios, shared with the Joyful Noise Listening Lounge. If you're looking for it, use the current Wedge Studios address, not any pre-storm listing.
Cafes We Excluded
Vortex Doughnuts, a longtime South Slope favorite, closed permanently in April 2026 after an ownership change and a labor dispute — unrelated to Hurricane Helene, but still appearing in outdated "best of" lists. Well-Bred Bakery & Café's Asheville-proper locations have closed; its remaining location is in Weaverville, a separate town outside Asheville city limits.
Traveller Disclaimer
Hours and operational status at small cafes and bakeries change, and River Arts District recovery is ongoing; confirm current details before visiting, especially for any business in a flood-affected area.
