Where to Stay in Cape May, New Jersey
There's no standard chain hotel inside Cape May's historic district at all, a genuine oddity for a beach town this size — but a strong lineup of Victorian bed-and-breakfasts more than makes up for it.

Introduction
Cape May's lodging is dominated by restored Victorian mansions and beachfront resorts. Worth knowing upfront: we could not verify a single standard national chain hotel located inside Cape May's city limits — a genuine consequence of the historic district's zoning, which has restricted large chain development. We checked eight properties below, all confirmed currently operating.
Congress Hall
Billed as America's oldest seaside resort, with hospitality on the site dating to 1816; the current building was rebuilt after an 1878 fire and restored in
- Operates year-round.
- *Check-in/out:
- 3pm/11am, confirmed directly on the official site.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- About 45 miles to Atlantic City (ACY), about 90 miles to Philadelphia (PHL) — see our travel guide's "Getting Here" section for which one to actually book.
- *Good to know:
- Complimentary valet or self-parking for overnight guests; pets aren't allowed (the official site suggests its sister property, Beach Shack, instead). Nightly rates aren't published — booking-system only.
The Queen Victoria
A Victorian bed-and-breakfast built in 1881, restored and opened as an inn in 1981, repeatedly voted the best B&B in Cape May by local readers.
- *Check-in/out:
- Rooms guaranteed ready by 3pm; standard checkout time isn't stated on the official policy page — late checkout costs $25 when available. Front desk hours run 8am-7pm April-December, 8am-5pm Sunday-Thursday January-March.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- Same as above — ACY closer, PHL the more reliable default.
- *Good to know:
- Off-street parking limited to 5 suites; free street parking nearby (meters disabled November-March). No pets under any circumstance. A 3.5% credit-card surcharge applies as of January
The Mainstay Inn
An 1872 mansion originally built as a private gambling clubhouse, converted to a bed-and-breakfast in the mid-1970s, known for its period antiques and 14-foot ceilings.

Angel of the Sea
A Victorian bed-and-breakfast about half a block from the beach, frequently cited as one of the town's most-photographed twin-turret mansions.
- *Check-in/out:
- 3pm/11am, confirmed directly on the official site; late arrival after 9pm needs advance notice. Contactless check-in/out available.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- Same regional figures apply.

- No pets; 14.625% room tax applies; children under 8 aren't accommodated. Parking policy isn't specified on the official site, though a third-party directory mentions private off-street parking.
The Southern Mansion
A circa-1860 mansion restored and set on 1.5 acres of gardens in the historic district, self-described as the largest and most opulent bed-and-breakfast in Cape May.
- *Check-in/out:
- Check-in between 3-7pm, confirmed directly on the official site; checkout time isn't stated anywhere on the official site — third-party sites assume the area-standard 11am, but this isn't officially confirmed.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- Same regional figures apply.
- *Good to know:
- Onsite parking confirmed; no pets except documented service dogs; quiet hours 9pm-8am; a $250 smoking fine applies.
The Chalfonte Hotel
Built in 1876 and billed as the oldest continuously operating original hotel in Cape May. Genuinely seasonal.
- *Check-in/out:
- Not stated anywhere on the official site; third-party listings consistently show 3pm/11am, consistent with every other Cape May property, but this isn't confirmed at the source.
- *Season:
- The official site's own season-opening text is stale (referencing 2020), but a special-rate promotion and an event listing both imply the hotel is operating from roughly late May/June through at least early October 2026 — confirm exact current-year dates directly with the hotel (609-884-8409) rather than assuming a fixed calendar window.
- *Good to know:
- No pets; no on-site parking — guests are directed to street parking near Franklin Street, avoiding yellow zones.
La Mer Beachfront Resort
A beachfront hotel with an on-site restaurant, now marketed under this name rather than its older name, La Mer Beachfront Inn.
- *Check-in/out:
- 4pm/11am, confirmed directly on the official site.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- Same regional figures apply.
- *Good to know:
Complimentary parking (permit required); no pets; minimum guest age 21 for booking. *Important:
the official site currently states a west-wing renovation project is planned to begin mid-September 2026, potentially running through 2028, including demolition of the existing Beach House annex — worth checking directly if booking fall 2026 or later, since this could affect noise or room availability.
Jetty Motel
A genuine budget option, an independently run motel directly across from the beach with an outdoor pool.
- *Check-in/out:
- 3pm or later (no early arrivals)/11am, confirmed directly on the official site; late arrival after 6pm needs advance arrangement.
- *Distance from nearest airport:
- Same regional figures apply.
- *Good to know:
- Strict one-car-per-unit parking policy with no exceptions, per the official site; no pets or smoking ($200 charge if violated); minimum guest age 25; bikes must be locked to the pool fence rather than brought into rooms.
A Property We Excluded
Mt. Vernon Motel closed for good after its 2021 season and was later approved for demolition, with the lot subdivided for single-family homes. It's excluded here since it no longer exists as a lodging option.
Practical Tips
Don't expect to find a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, or similar chain option inside Cape May proper — the historic district's zoning has kept large chains out.
The Chalfonte is genuinely seasonal — check current dates if planning an off-season visit.
Double-check any older source calling La Mer Beachfront Resort by its former name, La Mer Beachfront Inn — and confirm current construction status there if booking fall 2026 or later.
Several properties (Chalfonte, Southern Mansion, Queen Victoria) don't publish exact check-in/out times on their own sites — the figures given are the area-standard reported by third parties, not independently confirmed for those specific properties.
Cape May has no airport of its own; most visitors fly into Philadelphia (about 90 miles) rather than the closer but currently thin-service Atlantic City airport — see our travel guide's "Getting Here" section for the full breakdown.
Sources and Verification Notes
Each property's operating status, address, and history were checked against its own official site and cross-checked against Yelp or TripAdvisor. The absence of standard chain hotels within Cape May's city limits was independently confirmed by checking for major chain brands directly rather than assumed. Mt. Vernon Motel's 2021 closure and subsequent demolition approval were confirmed against local news coverage before being excluded. Check-in/out times and airport distances were checked directly against each property's own site where stated; where a property didn't publish its own times, we flagged the figure as third-party-sourced rather than presenting it as confirmed fact.
