Acadia National Park

Unlike many gateway towns, Acadia is genuinely intertwined with Bar Harbor — the nearest park entrance is roughly 2 miles from downtown. For 2026, driving to the Cadillac Mountain summit requires a separate $6 vehicle reservation on top of the park entrance pass, required from late May through late October. Current entrance fees run $35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass. Park Loop Road

Closes to vehicles seasonally from around December 1 through mid-April, though a couple of short stretches, including the section near Sand Beach and the road to Jordan Pond House, stay open to vehicles year-round.

Jordan Pond House

A historic restaurant inside Acadia National Park, not in downtown Bar Harbor itself, operating on the same site since 1893 and famous for popovers served with a view of the Bubbles mountains. It's seasonal, typically open mid-May through mid-October.

Whale Watching and Lobster Boat Tours

A genuine, well-established local industry with multiple long-running operators offering whale watches, puffin cruises, and lobster-boat tours, generally running late May through mid-October.

Bar Harbor Shore Path

A roughly 0.75-mile walkable path along the water in downtown Bar Harbor, established in

1881. Worth checking current conditions before a visit: sections were significantly damaged by severe coastal storms in January 2024, and full restoration status should be confirmed directly with the town before your trip.

Thunder Hole and Sand Beach

Both located inside Acadia National Park along Park Loop Road. Thunder Hole is a narrow rock inlet where wave action produces a booming sound and spray, most dramatic an hour or two before high tide. Sand Beach is a genuinely unusual cold-water beach made up largely of shell fragments rather than mineral sand.

Bar Harbor Village Green

A downtown public green, town-owned since 1899, with no park entrance fee required — a distinct, in-town attraction separate from Acadia National Park.
