Introduction

Key West's dining scene ranges from a chicken-roaming courtyard institution to fine dining reachable only by boat. We checked eight restaurants below, all confirmed currently operating — a couple of well-known local spots turned out to have closed and are excluded here.

Blue Heaven

A Key West dining landmark in a ramshackle Bahama Village courtyard where chickens roam freely, known for lobster benedict and key lime pie. Worth a seasonal flag: it closes for roughly six weeks every year after Labor Day, typically reopening in October — a genuine recurring closure, not a one-off.

• Breakfast/lunch daily 8am-2:30pm; happy hour 3:30-5pm; dinner 5-10pm. Open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Louie's Backyard

Upscale waterfront fine dining directly on the Atlantic, known for its Afterdeck Bar and signature conch fritters, open year-round.

• Lunch daily 11:30am-2:30pm; dinner roughly 5-9pm daily (one independent source suggests a later 10pm close — confirm when booking). Afterdeck Bar 11:30am-11:30pm; the Café runs Tue-Sat 5-9pm with no reservations.

• Main dining room takes phone-only reservations 9am-4pm Eastern at (305) 294-1061, opening bookings for the current plus following month on the 1st — highly recommended. Afterdeck Bar and Café are first-come, first-served.

• Genuinely upscale and romantic; the Afterdeck Bar or Café are the lower-cost ways to experience the same waterfront setting.

Pepe's Café & Steakhouse

Opened in 1909 and often cited as the oldest eating house in the Florida Keys, now under ownership that changed hands in 2021 — not a recent change, despite some sources implying otherwise.

• Daily 7:30am-9:30pm; happy hour 4-6pm.

• *Reservations:

• Listed on OpenTable; reservations recommended given it's small and can fill up, but walk-ins are common.

• *Good to know:

• No on-site freezer, so everything is fresh-made — the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the Florida Keys.

El Meson de Pepe

Cuban and island cuisine directly on Mallory Square, positioned for the nightly Sunset Celebration with live salsa on the patio.

• Mon-Thu 11am-9pm; Fri-Sun 11am-10pm.

• *Reservations:

• Accepts reservations and same-day phone seating at (305) 295-2620; walk-ins also accommodated.

• *Good to know:

• An 18% service charge is automatically added for parties of 5 or more, plus a 3% credit-card surcharge; family-owned since 1985, right on Mallory Square with live salsa music.

Seven Fish

A local seafood institution since

2003. Worth a location flag: it relocated from its original small Elizabeth Street spot to a larger Truman Avenue location years ago — any source citing the old address is outdated.

• Via OpenTable or the restaurant's own booking page; recommended given its popularity and small size.

• Live music on Sunday evenings.

Nine One Five

An upscale bistro on Duval Street itself, in a Victorian house dating to around 1850, with James Beard Foundation recognition.

• *Good to know:

• Genuine James Beard recognition — invited twice to host dinners at the James Beard House in New York.

El Siboney

A family-run, off-Duval Cuban institution, voted best Cuban restaurant in Key West by locals for decades — a genuine local pick away from the tourist strip. This refers specifically to the downtown Catherine Street location; a related Stock Island location keeps different, more limited hours.

• Daily 11am-9:30pm at the Catherine Street location.

• *Reservations:

• No general reservations, first-come-first-served — the one exception is the Paella Valenciana, which is made to order and should be called in at least an hour ahead.

• *Good to know:

• Budget-friendly, authentic Cuban, casual sit-down, bilingual staff.

Alonzo's Oyster Bar

A waterfront seafood and oyster bar at the Historic Seaport marina, operating on this site since 1947, with water on three sides.

• Daily 11am-10pm; happy hour 4-6pm daily.

• *Reservations:

• Accepted via OpenTable to skip the wait; also walk-in friendly.

• *Good to know:

• Sister restaurant to A&B Lobster House; discounted or complimentary parking validation for diners at the adjacent A&B Marina lot.

Restaurants We Excluded

Turtle Kraals, a longtime Historic Seaport restaurant, has closed, with its space reassigned to a different operator. Camille's, a 20-year seafood and gourmet spot, has also closed under that name after a brief pivot to a different concept.

Practical Tips

• If visiting in September, check Blue Heaven's current closure dates before planning around it — the 2026 window hadn't been announced as of this writing.

• Double-check any older reference to Seven Fish's Elizabeth Street address — it moved to Truman Avenue years ago.

• El Siboney is worth the short trip off Duval Street for a genuinely local Cuban meal.

• Pepe's Café's ownership change happened in 2021, not recently — some sources overstate how new the change is.
