Introduction

Cape May's dining scene ranges from a working dockside seafood house to Victorian-mansion fine dining. We checked eight restaurants below, all confirmed currently operating — a couple of well-known local institutions turned out to have closed years ago and are excluded here.

The Lobster House

A dockside seafood institution since 1954, docking its own commercial fishing fleet at the same wharf where Cape May's fishing industry offloads millions of pounds of seafood a year. Operates year-round.

• Lunch daily 11:30am-3pm, dinner daily 4:30-10pm per the official site — though some independent listings show an earlier 9pm close Sun-Thu with 10pm only on Fri-Sat, so exact closing may vary by night. The on-site Coffee Shop runs 6am-8pm (to 9pm Fri-Sat), Fish Market 8am-7pm.

The Ebbitt Room

Fine dining inside the boutique Virginia Hotel, sourcing hyper-seasonal produce from a nearby local farm and featuring Cape May scallops and other local seafood.

• Dinner daily 5-10pm per the official site, though one independent listing shows Mon-Thu/Sun closing at 9pm with 10pm only Fri-Sat — confirm for your specific night.

• Required, with a credit card hold; cancellations under 24 hours incur a $30/person fee.

• Smart-casual dress code (collared shirt encouraged for men); fine-dining pricing, entrées roughly $36-110+.

410 Bank Street

A longtime BYOB in a historic 1840s carriage house, serving French and New Orleans-influenced cooking with Caribbean touches.

• Currently in season — Tuesday-Sunday from 5pm through September 30, shifting to Thursday-Sunday in October; the exact season-ending date is listed as TBD on the official site.

• Encouraged online, but walk-ins are accepted; outdoor seating is first-come, first-served and weather-dependent.

• *Good to know:

• Confirmed BYOB with no corkage fee; smart-casual dress code enforced (no tank tops, swimwear, or athletic wear in the dining room).

Blue Pig Tavern

A casual New American tavern inside historic Congress Hall, on the site of Cape May's first tavern dating back to the 1700s. Operates year-round.

• Roughly breakfast from 7:30am, lunch through mid-afternoon, dinner until 9-10pm daily — exact meal-period cutoffs vary slightly between the official site and independent listings, so treat as approximate.

• *Reservations:

• Accepted via OpenTable or phone; not stated as required.

• *Good to know:

• Entrées span roughly $11-54 depending on meal period.

Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant

Fine dining in an oceanfront 1907 mansion. Changed ownership in 2025, and as of January 1, 2025 it's no longer BYOB, now carrying a full liquor license with a $40/bottle corkage fee for outside wine.

• Genuinely unresolved — the official site states only "7 days a week beginning at 5pm" with no closing time or specific closed days, while independent sources disagree sharply on both. Call (609) 884-9090 or check OpenTable for current hours rather than relying on a fixed schedule, including this one.

• Accepted via OpenTable.

• *Good to know:

• No highchairs, booster seats, or children's menu — children 12 and up are preferred.

The Mad Batter

A casual contemporary American restaurant inside the historic Carroll Villa Hotel, family-owned since 1976 and known for breakfast and brunch. Operates year-round.

• Open daily from 8am; the official site doesn't state a closing time, though independent sources suggest roughly 8:30-9pm.

• *Reservations:

• Genuinely conflicting reports — the official site links to Resy for dinner bookings, but some reviews report the restaurant doesn't take reservations while others say it does. The Resy link is the most actionable current option if you want to try booking ahead.

• *Good to know:

• Daily happy hour 4-6pm with half-priced drinks; known for crab benedict and oatmeal pancakes.

The Magnolia Room

A Southern-cuisine restaurant inside the Chalfonte Hotel, Cape May's oldest continuously operating hotel. Seasonal — currently in season, running May through September.

• Breakfast 8am-noon (closed Tuesdays), dinner nightly from 5:30pm.

• *Reservations:

• Recommended but not required; walk-in indoor seating is often available. Online reservations cap at parties of 12; the King Edward Bar offers a no-reservation lite-bites alternative.

• Signature dish is Miss Dorothy's Skillet Fried Half Chicken, part of a Southern menu tradition reported as over 100 years old at this property.

Uncle Bill's Pancake House

A breakfast institution since 1980, synonymous with weekend pancake runs, with two locations still operating.

• Cape May location (261 Beach Ave) daily 6:30am-2pm; North Cape May location (3820 Bayshore Rd) daily 7am-2pm.

• *Reservations:

• None — walk-in, with reported seasonal waits at peak breakfast times.

• *Good to know:

• Cash-only is widely repeated for this chain but only independently confirmed for its Stone Harbor location — don't assume the Cape May location is cash-only without checking directly.

Restaurants We Excluded

Axelsson's Blue Claw Restaurant, a well-known rooftop seafood spot, closed permanently back in 2015 after 35 years — the building was later redeveloped into a different restaurant. It still surfaces on some outdated "best of Cape May" lists and shouldn't be treated as current. A more recent closure, The Black Duck on Sunset, shut down in 2024 with its site redeveloped for condos and a spa.

Practical Tips

• The Lobster House and Blue Pig Tavern are the two strongest year-round picks if visiting outside peak season.

• 410 Bank Street and The Magnolia Room are both seasonal — check current opening dates before planning a shoulder-season trip.

• Peter Shields Inn's hours are genuinely unclear across sources — call ahead rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

• Double-check any source recommending Axelsson's Blue Claw — it's been closed for a decade.
