Wonderstate Coffee

Established in 2018 (in the building that once housed Big Water Coffee Roasters, then Kickapoo Coffee before its statewide rebrand), this is Bayfield's clearest example of a traditional sit-down coffee shop.

• Dine-in and takeout/counter service, online ordering available.

• House-roasted coffee/tea, bagels (lox bagel is a standout), locally-baked goods case. Most reliable year-round option.

Gourmet Garage

A family-run bakery since 1992 (started by Judy in a two-car garage; now run by son Ryan and wife Tammie in the same garage), known for homemade pies, pastries, and cookies.

• Walk-up bakery counter, takeout only.

*Good to Know:

• SEASONAL — open April through December only (closed Jan–March). Fruit pies (apple, caramel apple, strawberry-rhubarb, raspberry), scones, turnovers, cinnamon rolls.

Starlit Kitchen

A limited-hours sandwich shop and bakery, serving carryout soups, burritos, and sides alongside baked goods from what started as a home-baking micro-business.

Howl Cafe

A food and coffee counter inside Howl Adventure Center, a bike and outdoor gear shop just south of downtown.

Worth flagging as brand new — this pie shop (the name is a pi/pie pun) had its grand-opening ribbon-cutting scheduled for July 31,

• Handcrafted pies (cream, custard, pumpkin, French silk) and Italian-inspired fresh pasta and sauces. New enough that hours and long-term stability aren't yet well established — call ahead.

Coco

• Artisan Bakery & Good Eats

Worth a location correction: Coco is not in Bayfield itself, but in the neighboring town of Washburn, roughly 10-12 miles (about a 15-minute drive) south via WI

*Good to Know:

• Genuine artisan bread and pastry cafe with scratch-made breads, scones, and rotating seasonal pastries — worth the short drive, but don't expect to find it in Bayfield proper.

Places That Have Closed

Egg Toss Bakery Cafe (formerly 41 Manypenny Ave) has permanently closed (confirmed via Yelp, updated June 2026). Big Water Coffee Roasters (117 Rittenhouse Ave) closed in 2017–18; Wonderstate Coffee now occupies the same address. Bayfield County Coffee Co.'s walk-in shop has closed, though they reportedly still sell beans by phone. Juneberry Corner Store (formerly 250 Rittenhouse Ave) served its last day on 4/30/2026; owners are reportedly working on a relocation ("Juneberry 2.0") to an unannounced location. Don't plan a visit around any of these four.

Practical Tips

• Wonderstate is the pick for a classic, reliable, year-round sit-down coffee-shop experience.

• Gourmet Garage is the strongest match for Bayfield's apple heritage, but it's seasonal (April–December only).

• Four well-known former cafes/bakeries (Egg Toss, Big Water, Bayfield County Coffee, Juneberry) have closed — a common outdated-info trap in a town this small, so double-check any older Bayfield guide against this list.

• 3.14 and More is worth trying, but go in knowing it's a brand-new business without an established track record yet.
